CHAPTER TWENTY

S carlett had spent the morning feeding horses and mucking stalls. She didn’t pay much attention to the time as it passed. Aiden would be there at ten, but she was hoping to avoid him by hiding in the stable. She knew she was out of luck when Casey showed up just as she finished cleaning the last stall.

“Working hard?” he asked, strolling down the aisle toward her.

“Always.” She started pushing the wheelbarrow of manure to the back door.

“Hang on. I need to talk to you.”

She continued to propel the wheelbarrow forward. He came up from behind and reached around, placing his hands over hers. She twisted her hands and tried to keep moving.

“Stop,” he whispered.

“Let go. You’re hurting my hand.” She set down the wheelbarrow, broke free from his fingers, and ducked under his arms.

“I’m sorry. I forgot about the bruises.”

“That’s okay. It’s actually a lot better—unless someone’s pressing down on it.” She did her best to smile. “Did you need something from me?”

“Aiden’s here. You didn’t tell me he was coming by to see to you.” He secured her arm before she could turn away. “He’s waiting for you in my office.”

“Oh? I totally forgot.” She averted her eyes to hide the lie. “Can you tell him I’ll call him when I have some free time?”

“No,” Casey answered firmly.

“What do you mean, no?” She met his gaze. “Why not?”

“Because I think you need to talk to him. I don’t think it’s something that can wait for you to be free.” He used air quotes around the word.

“How do you even know what we’re going to talk about?” She narrowed her eyes. “Did he tell you something?”

“No, just that it was important. If you don’t want to talk, go inside and tell him. But I’m not doing it for you.”

“Fine, I will.” She headed for the door but stopped and turned her head over her shoulder to add, “Thanks for nothing!”

Casey didn’t care that she was pissed at him. Aiden wouldn’t let her get away with ducking their conversation. It was obvious that something was going on, and she needed to deal with it—whether she liked it or not.

When Scarlett walked into Casey’s office, she found Aiden lounging casually in the same chair as the day before. Instead of sitting down, she stopped a few feet inside the door. He looked up from the file he was reading and smiled.

“Hi. Come on in and have a seat.”

She stayed where she was. “I really don’t have time to talk today. I’m sorry you had to make the trip out here for no reason.”

He got up and brushed by her as he closed the door. “This won’t take long. Go ahead and sit down.” He rested his hands on her shoulders and gently guided her across the room.

She sank into the couch and watched him return to his own chair. “What do you want, Aiden?” she asked, unable to mask the irritation in her voice.

“I’d like to finish the conversation we started yesterday.
